WI Ladies part of Church team on 'tea duty' for NGS Day
busy serving teas.
It was a hot afternoon
and with 500 visitors,
they were far too
busy to stop work.
Betty busy too
but avoiding camera!!
First open Sunday was
27th July - very hot.
to the next job. There were
three gardens open in the
village but tea was served
here and the queue was
non-stop for hours.
Evidently they took
£850 - just on refreshments
no wonder they were busy
and the money went
to the church.
Aug 3rd was wet but almost as many people visited and they took £800+ on refreshments even tho' there was a power cut!!
Congratulations to Angela and her teams.
Keep Britain Tidy
Must remind everyone that the WI was in at the start of this. One of our NFWI mandates sparked off this campaign!!!
The Big Tidy-Up

Binegar are going to take part in the Big Tidy-Up in September. Got the box of goodies on Saturday. Just run off the poster. Committee know - will have to ask for volunteers from membership at all our August activities - perhaps when they are feeling mellow after all our foodie events - they may offer help. We have the bags, the coveralls to wear - they will just need to wear gloves!!!
Hmm ...... Fingers crossed!! I'm sure we will have some volunteers.

Great Milk Debate

As a follow-up to the very successful Great Milk Debate event run by County a farm walk was organised. The first had to be cancelled due to farm restrictions (bue tongue at that time I think) but this was a very interesting visit. We saw the fields(what a lovely view from the top field), the cows, 10day old turkeys, calves (one was one day old). Visited farm cottages that have been done up and are now holiday lets - a form of diversication for the farmer. Interesting point, Ruth told us the Kimber family have farmed there for 300 years. All in all, Ruth gave us an excellent afternoon. The well-stocked Farm Shop was also available and many of us were tempted!! As we left we were all given butter and cheese as a gift from Wyke Farms - a special thank you to the WI for their support during the milk crisis - the country wide support had really helped.
Oak Tree Saplings
AGM LIVERPOOL
Our delegate Margaret gave us a most interesting report of her visit to the AGM. The speakers were excellent and the whole day very enjoyable. Each WI was given an oak tree sapling to take home - a lovely idea 5,000 trees sent all over the country - I hope they all grow!!!
On the way to Liverpool - we stopped at the Staffordshire Potteries museum - they had a marvellous display but some unexpected items - a Spitfire, and Ozzie the pottery owl discovered on the Antiques Roadshow. Our hotel was fine and we had a good evening meal. The following day we were at the AGM and had a wander around the Albert Docks and a meal there. On the day we returned home we had a tour of Liverpool first and the large cathedral, unfortunately there wasn't time to stop and the R&C cathedral although we did circle it in the bus!!! Not quite what we had envisaged but we saw lots of statues, were amazed at Toxteth - scene of the riots - now rather an attractive street. Saw the site of 'the Cavern' of Beetles fame and toured the newly altered docks - again lunch at Albert Dock. The bus home was another story - we left Liverpool late (fine) but were then delayed by a huge traffic jam going through Bristol (nose to tail) and visited some very 'desirable' areas - some of which we probably won't bother with again - but best described as educational!!!! However, the pioneer spirit prevailed and there was much laughter and we finally arrived back over 3 hours late - hmmm...... some husbands were resigned to wait for ever at the pick-up point. Surprisingly, they had a chat together and seemed remarkably even tempered. Despite this the whole event was a great success.

Setting the scene
Binegar WI is also part of the Somerset Federation of Womens Institutes. We are a busy WI. We have many events as well as our monthly meeting on the 3rd Tuesday on the month at 7.45pm in the Village Hall.
1. 'Ladies who lunch' club meet one month on the first Tuesday and the 2nd month on the first Thursday. The ladies visit various pubs and restaurants in the area.
2. Book club meets about every 3 months - basically we just exchange books and in that way get to appreciate new authors. Anne keeps a list of who borrows what - so books rarely go astray.
3. Mahjong is played fortnightly - often at Sue's but sometimes at Anne's. There a few casual players - but the main group are very consistant.
4. We go to lots of county outings - this year is the 90th anniversary of Somerset Federation and there are so many events that we have decided not to have a big outing so that we can support as many as we can.
5. N Mendip Group is fairly active although we only have one Group Meeting a year now, two business meetings and various social activities. This year Litton and Hinton Blewitt held the meeting and we had a speaker about the history of cheese and for entertainment a fantastic local musical group.
Other events planned include:
A. A garden party at Litton- all 4 WIs in the group have a job!!!
B. A fish and chip quiz supper at Oakhill
C. A craft day in October at Binegar making Christmas Tree Decorations.
